Somebody else’s babies

So long, Western Civilization, it’s been good to know ya!  The internet has exploded (didn’t it just go up in flames a couple of days ago?) over Iowa Republican congressman Steve King’s recent tweet that, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.”  He later elaborated, “We need to get our birth rates up or Europe will be entirely transformed within a half a century or a little more.”  Why?  “This is an effort on the left, I think, to break down the American civilization, the American culture and turn it into something entirely different. I’m a champion for Western civilization.”

So, a few questions come to mind.  What is “our civilization?”  Why are “somebody else’s babies” unable to restore it (or, following the implication, why are they unable to restore it any better than our (his?) babies can?)?  Why do birth rates in America affect the transformation of Europe, and, why should I care?  What is the ‘left’ and why is it trying to break down ‘American civilization’?  What is Western civilization and why does Rep. King champion it?  I should probably know some of this, but I’m lazy, so I leave it all for someone (or no one) else to answer.  (Here are some more links (from what’s left of the exploded internet).  The HillThe Guardian.  More The GuardianCNN.)  Paul Ryan would like to think that King misspoke, but I kind of doubt it.  Somehow, this has something to to with the Dutch election (remember that guy from yesterday’s post?)  Who would have thought that a Dutch election would be such a big deal?  (But then, who ever thought the assassination of an archduke of Sarajevo would be such a big deal?)

As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “What do I think of Western civilization? I think it would be a very good idea.”
