The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) seems to be fighting a war on two fronts–one against the coronavirus and the other against the Trump administration.  The CDC’s director, Dr. Robert Redfield, recently testified before congress that a vaccine against COVID-19 would not be widely available until next year.  Trump responded by contradicting Redfield, claiming that he was “confused” (CBC, CBS).  Shortly thereafter, the CDC posted updated guidelines that warned that SARS-CoV-2 could be transmitted by air.  Two days later, they pulled these guidelines (CDC, CNN, AP).  One wonders why.  The Trump administration’s anti-science rhetoric and fumbling inaction have led to over 200,000 American dead (AP) and their constant harassment of the CDC has led to a predictable lack of morale at the agency (The Hill).  In this battle between politics and science, it’s increasingly difficult to believe the good guys are going to win any time soon.
